Your child's first cut
A first cut is a visit, not a race. This is how it goes from booking to the last comb.
- 01
Step 1: Book your visit
Book a quiet hour on a Tuesday or Thursday morning if you can, and say it is a first cut. We will set aside extra time and run only one chair.
- 02
Step 2: What to bring
A photo of the cut you would like, a small toy or a snack, and a cape or towel from home if your child has one they like.
- 03
Step 3: When you arrive
Come a few minutes early so your child can look around and meet the horse. Parking is in the lot behind the shop.
- 04
Step 4: What to expect
Your barber says hello, shows the clippers and lets your child try the chairs. The cut starts when your child is ready, scissors first. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes.
Chair options
Where your child sits
Pick the seat that works today. You can change your mind halfway through.
The horse booster
A booster seat shaped like a horse, with a footrest that keeps small feet still. Our usual seat for first cuts.
The regular chair
The same chair the grown-ups use, with a board across the arms to raise a school-age kid to the right height.
A parent's lap
You sit in the chair and hold your child, and the cape covers both of you. The barber works around you.
At the chair
We start at the back
The back of the head is behind your child and out of sight, so we begin there with the scissors or a quiet clipper, then work around to the sides when they are comfortable.
You can stay in the chair, stand beside it or sit where your child can see you.

Questions
About first cuts
What if my child gets upset?
We stop. A break, a hug or a different seat often helps, and if it does not, we tidy what is done and book a second visit.
Can my child bring a toy or a tablet?
Yes. A small toy or a video on your phone can help, and we ask that the sound stay low in quiet hours.
Do you cut curly and coily hair?
Yes. We cut waves, coils, curls, twists and straight hair, and we ask how you care for your child's hair before we start.
How old should my child be?
There is no right age. Most families come between one and three years old, once their child is steady in a seat.
